Market Outlook and Competition: The United States Geological Survey (USGS) issued a report in April 2008 that only scientists and oilmen knew was coming. It was a revised report (hadn’t been updated since 1995) on how much oil is in the area of the Upper Devonian-Lower Mississipian Bakken Formation in the US portion of the Williston Basin of Montana and North Dakota. The USGS assessment shows a 25-fold increase in the amount of oil that can be recovered compared to the agency’s 1995 estimate of 151 million barrels of oil. The USGS assessed undiscovered oil and associated gas resources in five continuous (unconventional) assessment units AU and one conventional AU for the Bakken Formation. For continuous oil reserves the USGS estimate of 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil has a mean value of 3.65 billion barrels of oil. New geological models applied to the Bakken Formation, advances in drilling and production technologies and recent oil discoveries have resulted in these substantially larger technically recoverable volumes. About 105 million barrels of oil were produced from the Bakken Formation by the end of 2007. The Bakken Formation estimate is larger than all other current USGS assessments of the lower 48 states and is the LARGEST “CONTINUOUS” OIL ACCUMULATION EVER ASSESSED BY THE USGS. In other words, this is a great place to grow an oil service like this one!
