Geiss & Sons Jewelers was one of Greenville's best-known independent jewelry stores for more than three decades. Located at 765 Haywood Road, the family-owned business built its reputation on fine jewelry, Swiss timepieces, custom design, and exceptional customer service.

Why the store closed

In 2026, owners Fernando and Rose-Marie Geiss announced they were retiring after more than 35 years in the jewelry business. According to Fernando Geiss, the decision was purely personal—not financial.

He explained that both he and his wife were 70 years old and felt it was the right time to retire after working their entire lives. They also planned to spend more time with their children and grandchildren, who live in Switzerland. A going-out-of-business sale began in late April 2026, with the store permanently closing at the end of June.

The company's history

The Geiss family's jewelry heritage extends back more than a century:

1919 – Fernando Geiss' grandfather opened the family's first jewelry store in Brazil, establishing the family's tradition in fine jewelry.
1960s – Fernando's father, Bruno Geiss, immigrated to the United States. After working in New York City's jewelry district, he settled in Spartanburg and opened a jewelry store there in 1968.
Over the following decades, the business expanded to include locations in Charleston, Hilton Head, and eventually Greenville.
1973–1976 – Fernando studied goldsmithing at the renowned Goldschmiedeschule in Pforzheim, Germany, one of Europe's premier jewelry schools, before returning to the family business.
1989 – The Greenville store opened on Haywood Road, where it became the flagship location for the Upstate.
