Business Description
After over two decades of providing the local gentry with the most beautiful and fragrant flowers, Richmond’s most sought after flower shop is for sale. This florist made a name arranging according to the ‘low and lush’ authentic and asymmetric aesthetic. They deliver custom arrangements throughout the Richmond area, to prestigious law firms and upscale weddings alike. Private school moms order corsages and bouquets far in advance. It would be hard to tell that their 1200 square foot shop had such reach, but their expertly curated selection of gifts, cards, candles and objets d’art have made this a walking destination for people in search of quality and variety. The well trained staff knows what they’re doing and gives white glove service with a smile.

The U.S. floriculture sector is projected to rise from $8.38 billion in 2026 to $10.53 billion by 2031 - a CAGR of 4.67%. But this is a K shaped growth pattern: Millennial and Gen Z demographics increasingly buy flowers as affordable luxury items, home décor, and wellness additions instead of exclusively as special occasion luxuries. This growing demand comes in part from high volume and low margin grocery flowers. This business chose the high-end, high-margin flowers and the customers who appreciate the difference. As in other businesses, the flower world has embraced the subscription model and the flower consumer has begun to seek experiences. This business led the way in Central Virginia on both fronts.

The broader nursery, greenhouse, and floriculture sector ranks 4th among Virginia's top agricultural commodities, generating roughly $399 million annually. Virginia generated over $132 million in recent cash receipts. The number of dedicated cut flower and florist green farms in the Commonwealth has skyrocketed from 184 to around 320 over the past 7 years.

A good buyer might be a larger, or out of town florist looking to stop competing on price and instead move to quality - or just move into the Richmond market in style. Vertical integration is also a real opportunity for a flower supplier looking to take the full margin. The rolodex is real, too, and a good strategic buyer might be targeting the same clientele for successful businesses selling clothing, cosmetics, chocolates or personal services. Event planners, designers, decorators and home stagers can all find a reason to buy the client list and the access. Similarly, a Corporate America refugee looking to apply the lessons of scale to an already successful business might appreciate the creative world and happy customers.

The owner is looking to retire. A well trained staff and long standing manager would love to stay on and continue making floral art for a living. A new owner could directly market to the mailing list, build a sales structure, actively pursue events, and build partnerships within the wedding, real estate and decorating worlds, build on the burgeoning subscription service, and help grow the business by offering a better curated experience than local CSAs.
