Business Description
Forget-me-not Media is a small business based in Anchorage that primarily deals with digitizing analog media, for the purpose of preserving family and/or institutional memories. It is a recession-proof endeavor since most people are interested in preserving their family memories. On top of serving individuals and families, we have also digitized the archives of many Alaskan organizations. We are the ONLY business in Alaska able provide this service at this scale. Most of our competitors are based in the Lower 48, and do not even service Alaska. Even if they did, most of our clients are reluctant to ship their precious memories out, making us a natural choice for most residents.

Though we have little competition, we strive to provide the best service possible, and have earned a 5-star reputation over the 13+ years we have been in business. We believe this reputation is one of the primary reasons people entrust us with their most valued possessions.

Our net profit has increased consistently over the years, and there is a significant potential for growth and price increases.

We are committed to help install the equipment and train the new owner to ensure a smooth transition.

Forget-me-not Media can be run from home by a single person (pretty much full time), or by two people (part-time), but can also be run as a store-front, if preferred.

The advantages of running the business from home are:
- Flexibility of working hours. .
- Multi-tasking. Working from home allows you, literally, to make money “while you sleep” (I usually set aside very long tapes to be transferred at night, so they are ready when I wake up) or while you do laundry or tend to your children.
- No driving. It is nice, living in Alaska, to be able to run a business without the need to drive anywhere in the snowy/icy road conditions that we often have.
- Low overhead. If you work from home, you don’t have the expense of a store-front, and be subject to unexpected increases in rent and separate utility costs, but you can also benefit from tax deductions based on the amount of physical space in your home that is dedicated to the business.

On the other hand, colleagues in the same industry in the Lower 48 who opted for a store-front, reported these advantages of a store-front:
- Higher visibility of the business, and higher income potential;
- Higher degree of separation between work and personal life; people with a store-front can more easily hire an assistant to run the business while they go on holiday, etc.

Physical requirements of the business:
You would need a very bare minimum of 100 square feet dedicated for the all the equipment necessary for the business. You would also need an entryway to receive customers who prefer to drop off their orders in person. In addition, we have a very large, secure dropbox (included in the equipment list) that we put outside the entrance of the studio for people to drop off their materials. It was extremely useful during COVID, as it allowed us to keep operating during lockdown, and is still occasionally used by clients who prefer to drop off their orders without appointment or when they can’t come by during normal business hours.

Summary of day-to-day involvement in the business:
Daily tasks include: answering inquiries by email or phone, digitizing media, briefly meeting with clients who drop off or pick up their order, writing estimates and invoices, receiving payment, keeping track of the accounts (we currently use Quickbooks online accounting software), keeping the studio clean. Depending on the workload, it can be a full time job for one person, or a part time job for two people. We have kept our prices lower to make our services affordable for everyone. However, if a potential buyer wanted to work fewer hours, while still keeping a similar net income, he or she could increase prices for the services.

Market Outlook / Competition
Practically non-existent competition in the state of Alaska. Providers in the lower 48 typically don’t offer shipping to and from Alaska.
Opportunities for Growth
On top of witnessing consistent growth throughout the past few years, there is growth potential related to price increase (we have kept our prices fixed for the past three years). We have grown the business without ever advertising, and with limited social media presence. If you are willing to invest in advertising, there is definintely more potential for growth.
