Business Description
Do you have a passion for food, wine, and storytelling, and experience in publishing, advertising, or media? Then you have all it takes to own (or co-own) Edible Mendocino & Lake Counties, a recognizable, award-winning branded food magazine with an established reputation in the community. If you've ever dreamed of owning your own publishing business, this could be the opportunity you're looking for.

Through its print issues, website, e-newsletters, and social media, Edible Mendocino & Lake Counties celebrates family farmers, fishermen, artisans, chefs, nonprofits, vintners, brewers and other food- and drink-related organizations in a two-county area of northern California. Its high-quality articles and stylish design and photography entices readers to shop frequently at their local farms, farmers' markets, specialty stores, and small businesses. With the motto “Eat, Drink, Read, Think” it also makes readers ponder where their food comes from, how it’s produced, and issues that local producers face. Its original, approachable recipes encourage readers to get back in the kitchen and cook real food, highlighting the best of what’s in season.

Due to conflicting professional commitments, the current owner simply does not have the time and bandwidth to grow the magazine to its full potential -- which is huge! Not only are there so many untold stories in this unique region--which is bursting with organic farmers, inventive chefs, seasoned foragers, passionate food artisans, and award-winning vintners--there is great untapped potential to grow advertising revenue and even expand the magazine beyond the two-county area.

Market Outlook / Competition
There is one other print food magazine in Mendocino County, and none in Lake County. Competitor magazine barely touches the wine industry, which is a key point of differentiation. Competitor magazine also focuses mainly on profiles of people--not processes, recipes, or issues/developments in food wine/industry, so there is plenty of room to cover the same territory from different perspectives.

Unlike in neighboring Sonoma County, most potential advertisers in Mendocino & Lake counties are not wealthy. They are mostly small and/or family run businesses with average income, which demands an advertising sales strategy that includes lots of personal interaction, education, and flexibility with pricing.

There are a couple of small wine publications in the North Bay, but they don't thoroughly cover the industry in Mendocino/Lake counties , which leaves lots of room to excel in this niche.
Opportunities for Growth
There are no comparable print publications in adjacent Humboldt County, which offers possibility for expansion of the title and re-branding.

The current publisher did not focus on ad sales growth, so there is great potential for the magazine to grow its revenue by increasing the number of advertisers in its web and print products, as well as by adding additional advertising channels such as in the e-newsletter, on the website, and on social media accounts. There is also potential to increase the number of snail-mail subscriptions and web traffic.

Other untapped revenue opportunities include:
- Branded events
- Branded trips/tours
- Drink/dining guides and or/cookbooks
- Pop-ups
- Sponsored video content
- Sponsored custom publications
- Branded merchandise and food/drink products

These strategies have been used successfully by other Edible publications.

Many publishers also leverage their publishing expertise by offering non-Edible custom publications and video content creation.
